Michigan recently approved a bill granting tax breaks for film production in our state. While I’m skeptical of tax systems as a whole, I favor those benefits going to the entertainment industry rather than automotive companies the region has been clinging to decades past their peak. (I assume the auto industry is still getting plenty.) Tax breaks seem a fair incentive — if the business doesn’t come, there is no cost, but if it does, the breaks will be balanced by local employment and an influx of outside cash. Example: the production company for this film alone rented a number of apartments in our city for three months. They’ll be eating at our restaurants and shopping at our stores. Welcome!
It seems that Michigan would be a great place to shoot a film. Prices are low. People are friendly. You’ve got beaches to the east and west that can stand in for oceanfront. There are farms and quaint towns, modern successful cities and cities past their prime, and neighborhoods of all types. Need an empty factory or office building to adapt for your shoot? We’ve got ‘em. It’s a short flight or less than a few hours’ drive to the studio and production facilities in Toronto, if you need them. Accents and scenery here are natural for movies set in the US, with fewer changes than you’d need to make filming in Canada (and we’re cheaper with the current state of the dollar, too). An office building in downtown Royal Oak seems to have been turned into a west coast bus station with the mere addition of a Portland-bound bus and a California flag, for example:
