Long weekend entertainment
I don’t plan to write about pinching pennies often, but it’s on my mind today, so here goes. It’s the end of a three-day weekend and Kid Dreadful has been visiting relatives, so my husband and I have had the house to ourselves. Mindful of our current budget, we tried to have a nice time cheaply, without feeling deprived. Success! We spent less for a few treats this weekend than we normally do for our weekly night out.
Out of pocket, we spent:
- $11.65 on Saturday dinner for two. That’s a restaurant meal with beverages and dessert. We had a “buy one get one free” coupon for signing up for an e-mail newsletter; that made all the difference.
- $.34 for two bottles of cherry Coke Zero Sunday, on the way back from a free tour of Henry Ford’s Fair Lane estate (review tomorrow). We stopped at CVS and bought the pop and a bottle of mustard. $.16 for the mustard (on sale for $.66 and I had a $.50 coupon), $.20 bottle deposit, and I used $3.00 of CVS ExtraCare bucks to bring down the cost to spare change.
- $1.34 for breakfast for two at Tim Hortons. I also used $7 of gift certificates that had nearly been forgotten.
- $9.50 for two matinee tickets to see Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull today. We went to an AMC Theatre and my MovieWatcher card ticked up to 32 points, earning us a free ticket for our next visit. Since an evening adult ticket is $9.50, we actually broke even.
- FREE: reading library books on the deck in the sun, biking down to check out the Memorial Day parade, puttering around the yard, watching the Stanley Cup finals, playing mindless online games, and sleeping past 6:00 am for three mornings in a row.
A total of $22.83. That doesn’t include gas money; the last time I filled up my car it cost $3.89/gallon ($4.09 at the pump now), and we probably burned 2-3 gallons over the weekend. Figure around thirty, thirty-two bucks total.
We could have spent less, but we easily could have spent a lot more for two restaurant meals, a movie, and some sightseeing. All in all, a good weekend.
